Harkerville Trail - between Knysna and Plettenberg Bay

The Harkerville Coastal Hiking Trail is one of the most stunning and challenging coastal trails in the Western Cape, located between Knysna and Plettenberg Bay in the heart of the Garden Route. This circular, two-day hike stretches across rugged coastal cliffs, indigenous forests, and pristine beaches, offering breathtaking views of the Indian Ocean. The total distance of the trail is about 27 kilometers, and it is known for its mix of tough terrain and scenic beauty, making it popular with more experienced hikers.

The trail takes hikers through a variety of landscapes, including towering fynbos, ancient yellowwood trees, and dramatic rocky coastlines. Along the way, hikers may spot dolphins and whales in the ocean, and there is an abundance of birdlife in the forested areas. There are overnight huts provided at Sinclair Hut for those doing the full trail, which offer basic accommodation. The trail requires a good level of fitness, as some sections involve steep ascents, descents, and rope-assisted rock scrambling.
